This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!

It's Disney Week! The Band EOY Trip to Disney World is coming up this weekend! If you're involved with that, make sure you've reviewed the itinerary!

BUT WE CANNOT SLOW DOWN!

Congratulations to the Baker County Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band for their performance at MPA!

I'm very proud of everyone's hard work leading up to and during that day! You were a great example for our community and our Middle Schoolers!

Now we get to refocus. Here's what's next to prioritize!

  1. If you are participating in the Leadership Tuesdays, that begins on Tuesday and starts at 4pm! Even if you did not participate in Solo and Ensemble MPA (and therefore do not qualify to apply for a position), everyone who is in High School Band is still encouraged to attend the classes! The lessons we learn in leadership classes often are life changing. I'm not just teaching you how to be a great leader, I'm teaching you how to be a great person.

  2. The Prism Concert is coming up on April 2nd! We want to have a show stopping performance! The ads for the concert will go up around campus this week! Let's have an amazing concert!

  3. State Jazz and State Solo and Ensemble are NEXT WEEK! It's time to lock in those performances! We have Jim Bruce from Fleming Island HS coming to work with us on 3/10!

  4. Music Ensemble Audition information is now public! If you have a certain class or classes you're interested in taking next year, YOU NEED TO PRACTICE. Just wanting with all your heart doesn't get the job done around here, prove with your playing that you deserve to be in the ensemble you want to be in. For Wind Ensemble/ Symphonic Band, the most consequential number of points are in the cleanliness/ accuracy of your scales. For Jazz Band, rubrics are available. Max out the rubric! Also, every year I'm amazed by how little juniors and underclassmen under utilize their most crucial resource-- our Seniors-- in preparation for this! Talk to the strongest musicians in band and ask for their help (and do it early because it's so hard to make meaningful changes late in the process).

  5. The Krispy Kreme Fundraiser begins this week! This fundraiser pays for our Band Banquet, so everyone needs to try hard on this one so we can have a nice event and so we can have all our awards and medals!

  6. Commitment Night is on 3/27! Make sure you bring YOU, your parent, Band Dues ($150) or $50 for the payment plan (or just talk to Mr. Moore), and your instrument! Marching Season is right around the corner!

Wednesday

Oye Como Va w/ Mr. Moore

Thursday

Spiraling Light w/ Mr. Moore

Definitions

  • IPT= Individual Practice Time- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on learning their music, prioritizing the section of music Mr. Moore will work that week FIRST, the section of music being tested next SECOND, and whatever the player knows they are struggling with THIRD. (IPT can be used freely for Percussion Ensemble music OR Concert music, but NOT Jazz Band music).

  • Floor Time- Percussionists are expected to work out rhythms with their drum sticks while sitting in a Drum Circle on the Floor. Care must be taken to ensure accuracy of rhythm AND that all players are playing (and moving their body) together at the same time.

  • CMS= Concert Music Sectionals- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on their Concert Music specifically. Sectionals may be self- led or be led by Mr. Moore or a member of leadership. If a percussionist isn't being worked with directly, they should be productive in working through another piece of Concert Music OR their Percussion Ensemble Music.

Things to Note 🎵:

Prism Concert 2026

The Theme for the 2026 Prism Concert is Decades, broadly meaning we're showcasing songs from particular decades in the past and the present. We would like a good representation of eras, so only THREE groups can perform pieces from a given decade (including the concert ensembles)! This might put a hamper on people who might want to perform popular songs from the 90's, 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. If you'd like to guarantee your slot, sign ups are available HERE.

For your consideration-- try to consider pieces from the early 20th century! There is a lot of great music there, be it jazz, classical, or even blues and early rock and roll. There is a lot of interesting music across all these music, so do your research! (But do it quick, because the Prism Concert will descend upon us VERY QUICKLY.)

Leadership 26-27

For those of you interested in Leadership, you’ll need to purchase your own copy of the paperback version of the book Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. We’ll be reading this book together starting in March.

Please be careful not to purchase Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

Please have read all the way up to "Habit 1- Be Proactive" by the first meeting!

(As a reminder, these are due by 11:59pm on Mondays).

Birthday Announcements! 🎂

By the way, I base birthday announcements on what I can see on the Band App, so if you would like to be recognized for your birthday on the weekly announcements, please make sure your Birthday is set to PUBLIC on the Band App. To do this: Go to our Band App> Settings (Cog on Top Right)> Set Profile> Show My Birthday> Anyone)

According to Band App, there are two birthdays this week!

Happy Birthday to Band Captain Jacob Ballinger (3/14), and Kenadee Altman (3/14)!

Let's have a great week everyone!

And GOOOOOO WILDCATS!
