Weekly Update (9/2- 9/6)

This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!

We're just moving right along!

Please be sure to keep up with your schoolwork and assignments. As a reminder, neither missing band events to address your classwork nor failing your classes and blaming band are excusable. You can use in- between (the time from 2:30pm- 4pm) as a time to get work done or study. Many of you have classes in common with other band students; it would be a great idea to work on your homework together! Progress reports are right around the corner (believe it or not!!) Band grades are mostly up to date-- I still need to plug in some play test grades. Also, Percussion Class's gradebook is a mess because of an issue from the beginning of the year. I'll need to fix that soon.

Please also keep on top of your health! There is a flu- like virus going around and it has already affected many of our band members (myself included 🤧). It's always good practice to use hand sanitizer, wash your hands regularly, avoid touching other peoples' hands/ etc, avoid touching high- contact surfaces, ect...

It's also a good idea to make sure you're still drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy diet. I know that many of you probably aren't thinking too much about your body, but take it from me and your parents-- We wish we had taken better care of our bodies when we were your age! Many of you are trying to watch your figure-- perhaps the easiest way to put a dent in your weight loss progress is simply to limit sugary beverages! This doesn't mean you must completely get rid of it, but consider drinking things with less sugar (ginger ale and zero sugar sodas, anyone? 😉).

Another many of you are trying to put on muscle. Look into safe, productive exercises that are going to be mutually beneficial for you while you're spending your time in band! You don't need weights to do arm, core, and calf exercises! Maybe there's a group of band kiddos that wouldn't mind putting together a band workout crew?🤔

Atlanta EOY Trip

Parents- the link is up and open to make deposits for the trip to Atlanta in May. Initial $100 Deposits are due by Friday, September 6th.

Please reach out to @Kellie Ballinger or myself if you have any questions.

When making the deposits, PLEASE make sure to put your CHILD'S NAME in the order details, so we know what student is attending. If you put your name we will not know who the student is.

All State Students

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO REVIEW THE CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS ON THE FBA AUDITION REQUIREMENTS WHICH CAN BE FOUND HERE.

If you are doing an All State Audition, we will have mock auditions on Wednesday, September 11th. It is here where I will also give you quick feedback on where you need to focus in your last days preparing your audition. Be prepared to play through all parts of the audition (in order: the lyrical exercise, the technical exercise, the chromatic scale, the major scales, and the sight reading); if you can't, I may tell you not to audition.

I will also use this mock audition to help determine which five students I nominate for the All State Honor Band (9th-12th) and which two I nominate for Tri- State (11th-12th).

If your name is not on the list below, it is, in fact, too late to request to audition for all state.

If you are auditioning for all state, audition times are as follows:

NFHB Auditions

Wind Ensemble, Symphonic, and Percussion Students will be preparing the contents of the High School NFHB Audition for chair placements which will be in the first week of October. In theory, if you prepare for our chair placements, you are mostly ready for the NFHB Auditions in November.

I recommend that everyone work on their scales first, which can be found HERE. In most auditions, scales are worth the most points.
