This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!


It's Rivalry Week!



The HOME vs. Bradford HS Game is this Friday. Just a couple things about it:


  1. This is more of a global thing rather than an adjustment for this game, but Band, Colorguard, and Majorette Parents not working the concession stand are being asked to sit in a new location (if you are facing the band, it's the area of seating right next to the Majorettes and Colorguard on the RIGHT.. where the teams' bags and equipment were last game). If that area fills up, then parents are asked find another area to sit, but to generally avoid what is supposed to be the student section on the LEFT of the band.

  2. Band Students already cannot go to the Band Concession Stand. Band Students must go to the Bathroom with a buddy for this home game.


I think that's really it. Rivalry Games are always a little tense, but there's no need for us to stir panic. If anything happens that isn't supposed to happen, report it. Keep your eyes open and pay attention. Above all else, stay with the band.


It's going to be a good game!



Other Important Reminders:


  • Check Outs from Football Games- In High School, all student pick ups and drop offs for Football Games and Competitions are from the High School Band room. Because all football games are considered field trips, students require documented permission to leave with their parents from the football stadium or other venues. If you know that you would like to take your child with you from a venue (ie, they will not ride the bus back to BCHS), you need to go to the front office to fill out a "Request to leave from venue" form which must be signed by an administrator, and then that signed form must be turned in to my door. When you take your child, please make sure I (or a Director) see both the parent and the student before you leave. If these forms are not completed, I am legally obligated not to release your student to you until we arrive back at BCHS. 

  • Excused/ Unexcused Absences- The Band Handbook gives instructions about Attendance for after school events:


It is important to note that while notice is always appreciated, if attendance conflicts aren't considered valid by the band handbook or by the school, they are not excusable. If a student has an attendance conflict, they need to communicate BOTH with their captain AND via email to Mr. Moore. Here is a link to the Full Band Handbook. Here is a link to the Calendar.


  • Pregame Meals and During Game Food- The Band is fed before football games. If there are dietary restrictions, please communicate with the Booster President Mrs. Jennifer Luke at president@bakercountybands.org. Because students are fed before games, concessions during half time or third quarter are considered privileges. At Home Games, parents can purchase food to be delivered at 3rd quarter for students to eat. Students will not be allowed to go over to the concession stand on their own during break due to security concerns and because the concession stand will be busy-- making it difficult to get food and return on time. At Away Games, students may be allowed to go to the concession stand (pending the nature of the game), but are expected to return on time, whether or not they were able to purchase an item.



Weekly Walkthrough 🧩


Monday, there are All State Mock Auditions. I believe there are only a small handful of students who have prepared an audition, so those students need to meet in my office after school at 2:30pm and we'll figure out an order then.


Tuesday, we have a Brass Sectional (student led) from 2:45pm to 3:30pm. We also have After School Rehearsal from 4pm to 7pm.


Wednesday, there are no events scheduled.


Thursday, we have an After School Rehearsal from 4pm to 7pm.


Friday, we have a Full Band Morning Performance (Call Time 6:45am) wearing your Dark Colored Wildcat Shirt/ Previous Year Band Shirt and Blue Jeans. We'll be playing stands tunes and waking everyone up for the rivalry game! We also have HOME vs. Bradford HS. 4:00pm Call Time.


Saturday, we have FSU Band Day. If you paid to go, please reference the Itinerary for details! Unfortunately, I don't believe band shirts will be in yet. So you can wear FSU gear or a previous year band shirt and SHORTS (it'll be hot). Just make sure that what you wear meets dress code.

Definitions

  • IPT= Individual Practice Time- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on learning their music, prioritizing the section of music Mr. Moore will work that week FIRST, the section of music being tested next SECOND, and whatever the player knows they are struggling with THIRD. (IPT can be used freely for Percussion Ensemble music OR Concert music, but NOT Jazz Band music).

  • Floor Time- Percussionists are expected to work out rhythms with their drum sticks while sitting in a Drum Circle on the Floor. Care must be taken to ensure accuracy of rhythm AND that all players are playing (and moving their body) together at the same time.

  • MMS/CMS= Marching Music Sectionals/ Concert Music Sectionals- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on their Music specifically. Sectionals may be self- led or be led by Mr. Moore or a member of leadership. If a percussionist isn't being worked with directly, they should be productive in working through another piece of their music.

Heads Up:

  • All Tests are Pass/Fail. Binder Checks are 100pts, Scales Tests are 150pts, Play Tests are 200pts.

  • Tests generally happen on Mondays and Fridays, with tests primarily happening on Fridays during Marching Season.

  • Binder Checks/ Flip Book Checks may not be made up.

  • Play tests on music may be made up until the next after-school rehearsal for that band. Percussionists may make up play tests until the next play test on the same weekday (e.g., a Friday test can be made up until the next Friday play test).

  • Scale Tests can be made up until the end of the Quarter.

  • Captains can no longer do make ups. All Make Ups go to Mr. Moore. Request a time to make up something by EMAILING HIM. Please only do a Make Up when you are prepared to pass.

All State Auditions are steadily approaching! Are you preparing an audition? Even if not, you should check out the audition music and practice it! It is available for FREE on our website, and you can become a better musician!


If you are auditioning, please make sure to keep checking the FBA Website for corrections so you can adjust! The music on our website IS NOT up to date with any corrections, so if there is something you need, please come talk to me immediately so I can help! There's nothing worse than showing up to the audition room only to find out you've prepared the wrong thing! Please make sure everything is correct!


We will have mock auditions later this month so you can practice auditioning and get some feedback.




UF Band Day


UF Band Day is on Saturday, September 12th! UF Band Day is a fun event where members of our band get to go to a University of Florida Football Game, play their instrument in the stands, and PLAY ON THE FIELD DURING HALFTIME! It's truly an amazing experience!


This year, UF is asking me to send my list of students by Monday, August 17th (!!!) so if you would like to go to UF Band Day, you need to fill out the form below, and I will take as many students as I can on a first come, first serve basis! Because there are only around 50-60 tickets, I advise signing up as soon as possible. The current interest list is posted HERE. The final list will be posted on August 17th.


Students who wish to go will need to pay a commitment fee of $15 to the band, which can be turned in by 8/14.


Parents who wish to chaperone: information will come out soon, but for UF Band Day, typically UF requires that parents purchase their own tickets separately. When that information becomes available, it will be posted.

FSU Band Day



FSU Band Day is on Saturday, August 29th! FSU Band Day is a fun event where students are able to attend an FSU Football Game and see how the Marching Chiefs does things! High School students don't get to play at this one, but it'll be fun to get the Seminole experience in the newly renovated Doak Campbell Stadium!


For tickets, I have around 50-60 total. 6 are reserved for professional staff, and 5 are reserved for chaperones. Chaperone and Student Tickets are available First Come, First Served. Students and Chaperones will need to fill out the form below, and I will take as many students as I can on a first come, first serve basis! Because there are only limited tickets, I advise signing up as soon as possible. I will post the list on Monday, August 11th.

🚨 INSTARAISE STARTS TUESDAY


Band Family, I need everyone to give me about two minutes on this one, because this fundraiser is extremely important. Please check out all of the dropdowns below.

First: BAND Fundraisers ≠ BOOSTER Fundraisers

This gets confusing, so I want to make the distinction clear.


Our Band Boosters conduct fundraisers throughout the year such as Fair concessions, raffles, car washes, and other hands-on activities. Those funds support the work of the Booster organization on behalf of our students. Band Fundraisers are the major campaigns conducted by the Band program itself.

And this year, I am intentionally trying to reduce those. I hear the fundraising fatigue from our students and families. My goal is for the Band itself to conduct only TWO major fundraisers this year.

But there is a trade-off:

If we fundraise less often, we have to participate MORE when it matters. And InstaRaise matters.

Our band program operates on more than $50,000 each year. InstaRaise has historically raised around $10,000 for us—which is fantastic—but this fundraiser has the potential to do considerably more when everybody participates.

This year:

🎯 GOAL: $15,000🔥 STRETCH GOAL: $20,000

These funds help pay for the everyday operation of our program, our marching production, instruments and equipment—including a needed class set of cornets—and our long-term goal of replacing our band trailer.

So I am asking EVERY band member to participate.

Not every student will raise the same amount, and I do not expect every family to have the same financial resources.

What I do expect is effort.

✅ Register for InstaRaise (You can do this tonight by going HERE... if you did instaraise last year at the Middle School or the High School, you can just click login, and your login info will still work. Our Campagin ID is 41753.)

✅ Add at least 15 legitimate supporters—family, friends, former teachers, family friends, etc.

✅ Actually launch/send your fundraiser

Our student leadership will be helping us reach 100% participation and checking our progress throughout the first week.

Choosing not to participate means you will not be eligible for the InstaRaise celebration or fundraiser incentives. Students who have completed the participation requirements will celebrate; students who have chosen not to participate will have regular band work during that time.


If I'm asking everybody to go hard on this fundraiser, we're going to have some fun with it too.

Group Leaders will report their group's progress to Jacob, David will help Jacob follow up where needed, and Jacob will give Mr. Moore the overall picture.

So throughout the fundraiser, you may see something like:

GROUP 1 — 80%

GROUP 2 — 100% 🍩🏆

GROUP 3 — 90% 👀

GROUP 4 — 70%

GROUP 5 — 100% 🍩🏆

GROUP 6 — 90%

GROUP 7 — 100% 🍩🏆

We will NOT publicly post the names of students who have not completed something.

We will NOT publicly post individual fundraising totals.

But your Group Leader will know who still needs to finish.

SEVEN GROUPS. TEN PEOPLE EACH.

Your group's first goal isn't $1,000.

It isn't $2,000.

It isn't even $100.

YOUR FIRST GOAL IS 10 OUT OF 10.
