Weekly Update (3/21- 3/25)

This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!

How are Krispy Kreme sales going? 🍩 Keep on selling! Money is due by the end of this week! If you would like to turn in what you have so far, you can do so by bringing money and forms to me either during C lunch, 7th Period, or after school. Keep on pushing!

In other big news... the BCHS Wind Ensemble gets to spend a day at Florida State University on Tuesday, April 12th! I have coordinated with Dr. Chandler Wilson and Dr. Patrick Dunnigan and they are happy to have us at FSU for a clinic. They have also invited us (and given us free tickets for) a concert featuring the University Wind Ensemble that evening! So we're going to make it into a full day! The details are still in the works, but we'll start off with an FSU campus tour that morning, then we'll go to lunch. After lunch, we'll do a clinic with Dr. Wilson. That evening's concert will feature a guest composer Jennifer Jolley, and there will be a Pre- Concert lecture we will attend. Finally the concert begins at 7:30pm in the Ruby Diamond. This trip would be at no cost to members of the Wind Ensemble, but because this will involve a clinic session among other things, I would expect all members to go. We'll talk about this more this week as I begin the process of gathering information and coordinating transportation, but for now, get excited! Not many High School bands get to do this!

The BCHS Jazz Band also has a trip coming up on Monday, April 4th to Douglas Anderson to see the University of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band. We were invited by Don Zentz who is the director of Jazz Studies over there. Call time will be 5:00pm and we'll eat pizza then head over at around 6:00pm. It will be a fun night!

And now for a message from our Booster President:

Parents, if you would like to chaperone the band on our trip to Universal Studios, you MUST have a current volunteer form on file with the school district. These forms can be picked up at and returned to the BCHS front office. The cost for chaperones will vary depending on whether you ride the charter bus or not and how many people with whom you wish to share a hotel room. The costs break down as follows:

  • Hotel Room with 2 queen beds and a pull out sofa bed - $159.00 per night, 2 per room - $79.50 per person or 3 per room - $53.00 per person

  • Universal Ticket - $110.00

  • Dinner at Hard Rock Cafe - $25.00

  • Current price for a seat on the Charter Bus - $49.00

If you are planning to attend the trip as a chaperone, please pay a deposit of $100 for yourself as well as your student and send me an email with information on whether you will be sharing a hotel room or will need a seat on the bus. This will help us make the appropriate reservations.

Thank you,

Elena F. Lowther

Things to Note 🎵:

Music Ensemble Auditions

Music Ensemble Auditions which will determine placement in Wind Ensemble for the 2022-23 School Year will begin March 28th. The number of musicians in Wind Ensemble will stay about the same and most students entering the band next year will be placed in Symphonic Band as a result. This is good news for both ensembles! Wind Ensemble will be very competitive, and Symphonic Band will increase dramatically in size! Requirements for this audition will come out in February, but students can prepare by working on the following Scales in 2 octaves All State Pattern: G, C, F Bb, Eb, Ab, Db.

Band Booster Scholarships

Now available are the Band Booster Scholarship Applications! One Scholarship is for any student in our Band Program who would like to go to a summer music camp! All Drum Major Candidates are required to apply for this option, but all my students are encouraged to apply. The money from this helps to pay for a trip to a summer music camp of your choosing. Summer Music Camps are a life- changing experience where you can learn how to become a strong musician and make great friends with students from across the state.
