Weekly Update (2/5- 2/9)

This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!

We are starting to enter another MPA Season. It's probably not too bad for the average bear, but it's important that everyone stays on top of the calendar and their commitments. The simple fact is, you can't grow if you aren't here; reasons for not being present are notwithstanding. Do whatever you can to stay on top of your grades and your health so that you can be at school. Yes, it's hard work, but nothing worth doing isn't gonna be a bit of hard work and sacrifice from time to time.

The Dominos Fundraiser is over!

We've raised $1620 in online sales! We did not reach our mark, but what we raised is not nothing. Good job to those of you who did your part!

I'll get with the group leaders so we can determine which group won the prize (if any).

The Solo and Ensemble Pre MPA Concert is this Tuesday!

  • Call Time is 4:00pm and the concert will begin at 6:00pm.

  • All Members of Wind Ensemble and Symphonic are expected to attend-- Wind Ensemble members are supposed to be performing (meaning if you are in Wind Ensemble and still do not have a piece to perform either in part or in whole, you are in danger of earning a zero for this performance grade), and Symphonic Members will be watching the concert and completing judge sheets.

  • You/ Your Ensemble will be graded based on the rating you earn from me on your Adjudication sheet. (Superior= A, Excellent= B, Good= C, Fair=D, Poor =F). If you are in multiple performances, I will put in whichever would be the highest grade for you.

  • You will need to make sure I have the original to read from, and you have a copy to read from during your performance.

  • Parents are welcome to come enjoy the concert, however seating will be limited and the concert is not going to be advertised.

  • I'm putting Kelsey, Kaiden, and Sunny (Stage Managers) in charge of ensuring the smoothness of the concert. I will be adjudicating performances in the back of the hall, and will not be able to move around.

  • Everyone performing solos will need to have practiced with the recording that RJ provided, because you will be playing with that recording on stage.

  • If you have a multi- movement piece, you will only need to perform one movement UNLESS you are performing for Solo and Ensemble MPA.

  • I'm kindly giving everyone class time (2nd- 4th period) on Monday and Tuesday to work on their Solo and Ensemble music. You should bring headphones or a bluetooth speaker or some other similar device so you can practice with your accompaniment recording.

Updates from the Trip Meeting

Ultimately we have decided to do a 2 day trip to Universal.

  • Dates are 4/27-28. 4/27- Travel to Universal Studios on a 2 Day 2 Park Hopper (Buc-ee’s on the way down) and meal voucher (Spend all day at parks), go to Hotel, Pizza (included) and Pool Party. 4/28- Travel to Universal Studios on a 2 Day 2 Park Hopper and meal voucher (Spend all day at parks), Go Home (stop at Buc-ee's along the way). Final Itinerary to be posted pending number of deposits.

  • Trip no longer includes State MPA Performance. Wind Ensemble will aim to perform Thursday and then go on trip starting Saturday morning.

  • The Trip is open to members of Band/ Chorus who have no disciplinary referrals, excessive absences, and a GPA above 2.0. This is a school policy, don't shoot the messenger. Stay on top of your grades, and stay well behaved. If there are questions about this, you can email me at myles.moore@bakerk12.org.

  • $150 Deposit is due on February 15th. Full Balance will be determined based on number of deposits. After deposits are made, we will determine the final cost per person; if the cost exceeds $400 per person, trip cancels and everyone receives full refund. If the cost is under $400 per person, remaining balance will become due on March 15th. It is still true that if the number of attendees is somewhere between 50 and 100, the final per person price will be roughly between $200-$400.

  • PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID IN PART/FULL FOR A BAND TRIP. If you DO want to do this trip, then you will receive a refund of whatever overage remains after the full balance of the trip is paid. You can also use your payment to cover deposits by reaching out to Jennifer Luke at president@bakercountybands.org. If you DO NOT want to do this trip, email Jennifer Luke at president@bakercountybands.org to request a refund.

  • If you want this to happen, students, you need to help encourage people to deposit and sign up for the trip.

Things to Note 🎵:

Leadership Mondays 2024

It's crazy that we already need to start thinking about Leadership for the upcoming school year! If you are interested in becoming a part of the leadership team for 23-24, then you should do the following:

  • Let a Drum Major/ Quartermaster know you are interested

  • Purchase 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey (Do NOT Purchase Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People)

  • Plan to attend the Leadership Monday Meetings on 2/26, 3/4, 3/11, 3/25, 4/1, 4/8, 4/15, and 4/22.

  • Take a look at the below document if you want some ideas on things that we look for out of potential candidates.

Some other things you should consider:

  • We are looking to e x p a n d our leadership team a little bit. (We don't know what this looks like yet).

  • We want to find a way for Captains/ QM to go to Leadership Camp as well as the DM's. (We don't know what this looks like yet).

  • You can talk to myself and other leaders about the process if you wish-- just remember to be judicious.
