This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!
Hello Folks!
Well folks, we've approached the end of the school year! It's kind of unbelievable when you think about all we've managed to achieve together this year. Seeing as how this is the last Weekly Update you'll receive from me for this school year, I'll take this time to say how proud I am of each of you, particularly how much you have grown. I'm so excited to work with you next year as we push toward greater heights!
But the new year of band is not that far away! We kick off Leadership Camp on June 2nd and Rookie Camp on June 4th! There's also plenty of fun things going on with band throughout the summer, so keep an eye out!
Percussion Camp starts on July 7th and Full Band Camp starts on July 14th (with Data Day on July 12th). That's a lot of time to go without playing your instrument! It would be terrible for you all to RESTART all your progress instead of continuing on so we can be even better moving into next year.
I encourage you to find something to practice-- preparing the All State Audition is an EXCELLENT way to force yourself to grow into a stronger musician; you can also explore Solo and Ensemble music to add to your repertoire, or you can even just find different fun pieces of music to play! Music publishers like Hal Leonard sell songbooks with Disney selections, popular music, and more all the time; books like those can be found quickly on Amazon or JW Pepper.
Explore private lessons! Many people offer private lessons online nowadays, and private tutorship is a surefire way to achieve growth on your instrument (the schools/ band programs with tons of resources often require their students to take private lessons).
I recognize many of you are looking at your instrument as I type all this and saying "I'm not going to TOUCH that thing all summer because I've worked so hard this year". Well, I ask you, do you ever practice the things YOU enjoy? I know many of you practice the music we work on in class, but if you never make time to play the things you enjoy then something that's supposed to be fun and enriching becomes work... then you don't want to practice. Here's an idea, even once a week (preferably more) set up a practice session where you warm up with your scales, some long tones, and an articulation exercise for 10 minutes. Then practice some of the All State Music (and record yourself) for 30 minutes. Then play something fun from a songbook or the internet for 20 minutes. Watch the results pay off!
Above all, I hope you all will stay safe and drink plenty of water this summer! I'll see you all very soon!
