Weekly Update (3/26- 4/1)

This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!

Hello Folks!

I hope everyone's enjoying the slower pace of things! For students, it's a good opportunity to get caught up on things and practice for upcoming music ensemble auditions! Be productive with your time and keep your eye on the ball!

Band Handbook Change

A Heads Up on a new Band Handbook Policy change. This change will not be reflected in the band handbook until next year's rendition, however the policy will be in effect.

Effective now, and moving forward:

Except for the most emergent situations (Death in Family, Sickness/ Injury, Godly Forces, etc...), absences shared with the director the day of the respective graded event will be still recorded as a ZERO in the gradebook.
As one function of band is to help students prepare for adult life outside of High School, parents must understand that students are expected to manage their own schedule and communicate conflicts professionally (via email) with the relevant parties. Therefore, in most instances it is not appropriate to spring an up absence on a supervisor, a team, or -- in the case-- Band Director the day of or even the day before an event.
It is on THE STUDENT to communicate; the Parent should guide the student. Best practice is to communicate as soon as you are aware of the conflict or with 1-2 weeks notice. Never assume anyone knows about your scheduling conflict.

It is observable that this is a response. This response is not to any one situation or parent so I ask that no one take offense. I seek to correct behaviors that have been occurring more frequently throughout the year. Band is an activity that relies strongly on every member, so not receiving adequate notice related to lateness or absences hurts our ability to achieve.

Please spread the word so no one is caught off guard.
