This is your weekly MUSIC DEPARTMENT update!
Hello Folks!
Alright! We are now in our busy season, meaning there is at least one major event every week until school gets out (except for spring break).
What does this mean for you?
I means you need to stay on top of your school work, keep practicing, and do your best to stay on top of your health!
Also!! Encourage your peers to stay on top of reading the weekly update and doing the weekly update quiz. There has been a dip in people who submitted their quiz last week and it continues to be SO important that EVERYONE take the time to know about what's going on each week!
Weekly Walkthrough 🧩
Monday, we have Winterguard Rehearsal from 3pm to 5pm, and Symphonic Band Rehearsal from 5pm to 7pm. It's later than usual because we need everyone there, but we also don't want to impede on Winterguard's rehearsal time. The band room will (of course) be open for everyone if people want to use the time to complete homework/ practice/ whatever. Everyone's flexibility is appreciated!
Tuesday, (Please Read) we have the BCHS/ BCMS Pre MPA Concert. Call Time is 4pm, and the Concert begins at 6pm. There will actually be THREE non- baker band directors there giving commentary, Mr. Oyster and I will also be giving commentary to each other's ensembles, and another Band Director will be there observing. So, it's important that we look good, and give this our best! Since two of the directors there are FBA Adjudicators, this is a VERY important event, and basically is like our MPA. We'll also be professionally recording this event so we have updated recordings to give to other directors for feedback. Please encourage your parents to purchase VIP Seat tickets-- these funds go directly to the HS Band and will continue to help us operate through this school year. Like the S/E Concert, we'll need to schlep back tonight because I won't be in tomorrow and it'd be better for a sub not to have to deal with students everywhere. It'll also enable you to listen to feedback without having to worry about grabbing schtuff.
Everyone needs to do their part before and after the concert to earn the performance grade:
Clarinets/ Trumpets/ Low Brass: Set Up and Tear Down Cafeteria Tables, VIP Seats, and Audience Chairs
Bass Clarinets/ Tubas: Reset the Band Room/ Ensure all items are put back properly at end of night
Horns/ Saxophones: Stage Transitions and Lights
Flutes: Sweeping Floors, Removing Trash, and Cleaning Band Room
There will be a sign out sheet. Ask your captain permission to leave and they will let you know if your section is done or not. Leaders will record on the sheet when each section finished their responsibilities. If your time is not marked correctly or reflects that you did not leave after things were finished, you'll receive a zero.
Wednesday, Winterguard rehearses from 3pm to 5pm.
Thursday, we have Wind Ensemble Rehearsal from 4pm to 6pm.
Friday, Surprise! (😅) The BCHS Jazz Band will perform during the lunches. We're just doing our MPA set. You can just come to school dressed normally... it's very casual, and it's our contribution to Black History Month on Campus! Also, Winterguard rehearses from 3pm to 5pm.
Saturday, Winterguard performs at Ridgeview HS! Please wish them luck!

Definitions
IPT= Individual Practice Time- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on learning their music, prioritizing the section of music Mr. Moore will work that week FIRST, the section of music being tested next SECOND, and whatever the player knows they are struggling with THIRD. (IPT can be used freely for Percussion Ensemble music OR Concert music, but NOT Jazz Band music).
Floor Time- Percussionists are expected to work out rhythms with their drum sticks while sitting in a Drum Circle on the Floor. Care must be taken to ensure accuracy of rhythm AND that all players are playing (and moving their body) together at the same time.
CMS= Concert Music Sectionals- Percussionists are expected to work diligently on their Concert Music specifically. Sectionals may be self- led or be led by Mr. Moore or a member of leadership. If a percussionist isn't being worked with directly, they should be productive in working through another piece of Concert Music OR their Percussion Ensemble Music.

Things to Note 🎵:
Prism Concert 2026
The Theme for the 2026 Prism Concert is Decades, broadly meaning we're showcasing songs from particular decades in the past and the present. We would like a good representation of eras, so only THREE groups can perform pieces from a given decade (including the concert ensembles)! This might put a hamper on people who might want to perform popular songs from the 90's, 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. If you'd like to guarantee your slot, sign ups are available HERE.
For your consideration-- try to consider pieces from the early 20th century! There is a lot of great music there, be it jazz, classical, or even blues and early rock and roll. There is a lot of interesting music across all these music, so do your research! (But do it quick, because the Prism Concert will descend upon us VERY QUICKLY.)
FSU Summer Music Camps
Registration for FSU Summer Music Camps is OPEN!
The boosters will be offering a scholarship of $150 towards your cost of any summer music camp for one high school student and $100 for one middle school student.
You must submit an application to apply for this scholarship and you must show proof that you are registered to attend a camp when applying.
Leadership 26-27
For those of you interested in Leadership, you’ll need to purchase your own copy of the paperback version of the book Seven Habits for Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. We’ll be reading this book together starting in March.
Please be careful not to purchase Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.
(As a reminder, these are due by 11:59pm on Mondays).
